What Should You Do First After a Storm?
Stay safe, document any visible damage from the ground, and get a professional inspection before you call your insurer. A documented inspection first means your claim is built on evidence, not guesswork.
Walk your property from the ground and photograph anything obvious like dented gutters, shingle debris in the yard, dings on metal vents or your AC unit. Don’t climb onto a wet or damaged roof! That’s how people get hurt, and it’s not necessary. Hail and wind damage often hides in detail that only shows up on a close, professional inspection.
If you have an active leak or exposed decking, call us immediately. Wegner provides 24-hour emergency storm response and tarping with no emergency dispatch fee for storm-related calls. We’ll secure the roof to prevent further interior damage while you sort out your claim.
What Types of Storm Damage Can Affect Your Roof?
Tennessee storms damage roofs through hail, wind, debris impact, and flashing failures, and each one shows up differently. Some cause immediate leaks while others quietly shorten your roof’s life until a close inspection reveals them.
Hail damage
bruising (soft spots where the mat is compromised), granule loss that exposes the asphalt layer, and mat fractures that crack the shingle. Hail damage shortens roof life even when it doesn’t leak right away.
Wind damage
lifted, creased, torn, or completely missing shingles. Once the seal breaks, water gets underneath even if the shingle is still in place.
Debris impact
falling limbs and windborne debris that puncture or crush shingles and decking.
Flashing & valley failures
damaged flashing around chimneys, vents, and valleys, where leaks most often begin.
Active leaks
interior water staining, soaked insulation, and decking rot that follow any of the above.
Important: hail damage cannot be reliably judged from the ground. What looks fine from the driveway can hide dozens of impact points. A professional, up-close inspection is the only way to know what you’re actually dealing with.
What's Included in a Free Post-Storm Roof Inspection?
Our free post-storm inspection gives you an honest, documented assessment of your roof, including the photo evidence that supports a claim, whether or not you have damage worth filing on.
Here’s what’s included:
- A full close-up evaluation of shingles, flashing, valleys, vents, and gutters
- Detailed photo documentation of every damage point: the kind of evidence that supports an insurance claim
- A clear written summary of findings
- A straight answer: real storm damage, or no significant damage. If your roof is fine, we’ll tell you so.

How Does the Roof Insurance Claim Process Work?
It runs in six steps: document the damage, file with your insurer, meet the adjuster, agree on scope, complete the work, and finalize invoicing. Every policy differs, and the final outcome of any claim is between you and your insurer.
- Document the damage. We perform the free inspection and create dated photo documentation of all storm damage. Strong documentation is the foundation of any claim that may qualify for coverage.
- File with your insurer. You contact your insurance company to open a claim. Note the date of the storm and your claim number. We’ll keep our records aligned with yours.
- Adjuster meeting. Your insurer assigns an adjuster to inspect the roof. Wegner can attend and coordinate with the adjuster on-site, walking the roof together so nothing legitimate gets overlooked.
- Scope agreement. The adjuster issues a scope of damage and estimate. We review it against what we documented and, if something covered appears to be missing, we can provide supplemental documentation to your insurer.
- Repair or replacement. Once the scope is approved, we complete the work to code and to manufacturer specification.
- Final invoicing. We invoice in line with the approved scope and help close out the paperwork, including any depreciation release your policy allows.
All throughout the claims process, our role is to document thoroughly and advocate on your behalf, but we never promise a specific result. Whether a claim is approved, and for how much, depends on your policy and is decided by your insurer.
What's the Difference Between ACV and RCV on a Roof Claim?
ACV pays your roof’s depreciated value while RCV pays to replace it, and the difference can be thousands of dollars. Knowing which one you carry, plus your deductible, before you file prevents nasty surprises.
- Actual Cash Value (ACV) pays the depreciated value of your roof: replacement cost minus age and wear. On an older roof, that can be substantially less than the cost to replace it.
- Replacement Cost Value (RCV) pays to replace the roof with the same or similar materials, typically releasing the depreciated portion after the work is completed and documented.
You’ll also have a deductible, or the amount you’re responsible for before coverage applies. Many Tennessee policies now carry a separate wind/hail deductible, often calculated as a percentage of your home’s insured value rather than a flat dollar amount, which can be higher than a standard deductible.
We can’t tell you what your policy says so we strongly encourage you to read your policy or call your agent and confirm whether you carry ACV or RCV and what your wind/hail deductible is. We’ll never offer to “eat” your deductible or promise a “free roof”. That’s not how legitimate roofing works.
Do You Need a Repair or a Full Replacement After a Storm?
It depends on how widespread and severe the damage is. Not every storm requires a new roof. Isolated damage may call for a targeted repair, while widespread hail damage or an end-of-life roof may make replacement the better choice.
A targeted repair makes sense when the damage involves only a few wind-lifted shingles, one damaged valley, or a small debris impact on an otherwise healthy roof. A full replacement may be warranted when hail bruising or granule loss is widespread, the roof is near the end of its service life, or the insurer’s approved scope covers a complete replacement.
We’ll give you an honest assessment after the inspection and direct you to the appropriate resource. Visit our page for roof repair in Franklin to learn about targeted fixes or explore roof replacement options for a complete roofing system.
If you’re replacing your roof after a hailstorm, ask us about upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles where appropriate. They offer added protection against future hail and may qualify you for an insurance premium discount. We can also help you evaluate durable metal roofing systems if you want a long-lasting alternative with strong resistance to severe weather.
How Do You Avoid Storm-Chasers and Roofing Scams?
Watch for out-of-town door-knockers, large upfront payments, deductible-waiver offers, and high-pressure tactics. Choose a licensed, local, insured contractor instead. After a big storm, “storm chasers” flood Franklin neighborhoods; knowing the red flags protects your home and wallet.
Be cautious if a roofer:
- Knocks on your door right after a storm and pressures you to sign or decide on the spot
- Demands a large upfront payment before any work begins
- Has no local address, license, or proof of insurance you can verify
- Offers to waive or “cover” your deductible (this practice can be illegal and is a hallmark of a scam)
- Pushes you to sign over your insurance claim before you understand the document
A legitimate contractor is licensed, locally based, insured, and patient with your questions. Wegner has been part of this community since 2011, and we’re still here long after the storm-chasers have left town. When the work needs a warranty honored five years from now, local matters.
What Warranty Comes With Your Storm Repair?
Your storm repair is backed two ways: our workmanship warranty on the installation and manufacturer coverage on the materials. Our workmanship warranty covers the quality of the installation such as labor, flashing details, and seal, so if something we installed fails, we make it right. On full replacements, you also get manufacturer coverage from GAF or Owens Corning on the materials themselves, which can include extended system warranties when we install a complete certified roof system. We’ll explain exactly what each warranty covers before work begins.

How do I know if I have hail damage on my roof?
You usually can’t tell from the ground. Hail bruising and granule loss hide in detail. The reliable way to know is a free professional inspection that gets up close and documents every impact point with photos.
What's the difference between wind and hail damage?
Wind lifts, creases, tears, or removes shingles and breaks their seal. Hail bruises the mat, knocks off protective granules, and can fracture shingles. Both types of damage may qualify for an insurance claim depending on your policy.
What should I do in the first 24 hours after a storm?
Stay safe and off the roof, photograph any visible damage, and schedule a professional inspection. Then contact your insurer. If there’s an active leak, call us and we can tarp the roof to stop further damage.
What is ACV vs RCV on a roof claim?
Actual Cash Value pays the depreciated value of your roof; Replacement Cost Value pays to replace it, typically releasing depreciation after the work is documented. Check which one your policy uses before you file.
What if my insurance adjuster underpays the claim?
We can provide additional documentation and advocate on your behalf by supplying photo evidence and supplemental detail. The final outcome, however, is between you and your insurer. We never guarantee a result.
Should I get impact-resistant shingles after hail damage?
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles resist future hail and may earn you a homeowners premium discount. Ask your insurer whether they offer one. We can upgrade your roof to Class 4 where applicable during a replacement.
How do I avoid storm-chasing roofing scams in Franklin?
Be wary of out-of-town door-knockers, demands for large upfront payments, deductible-waiver offers, and high-pressure tactics. Choose a licensed, insured, locally established contractor you can verify and reach long after the storm.
